Happy Independence Day, Latvia!
The present Doodle observes Latvia’s Independence Day, otherwise called Latvijas Republikas proklamēšanas diena (Proclamation of the Republic of Latvia).
On this day in 1918, the People’s Council of Latvia pronounced the nation’s autonomy from German and Russian occupation.
Portrayed in the present Doodle is the Latvian national flag, which includes a single narrow white stripe against a field of crimson.
The flag was officially received in 1990—a year prior to Latvia again announced its self-sufficiency after generally 50 years of Soviet principle yet its plan follows back hundreds of years.
As indicated by a fourteenth century composition named Livländische Reimchronik (“Livland Rhyme-Chronicle”), a comparable pennant was flown by Latvians as far back as 1279.
