For maintaining a slow overrate at the Ashes opening match at Edgbaston, both Australia and England have received penalties. Both teams have had two WTC points taken away from them, and each player on both team has been fined 40% of their match money from the contest.
Both sides fell two overs shy of the desired number of overs, according to match referee Andy Pycroft, who assessed a 20% match fee punishment and a WTC point for each undershot. Ben Stokes and Pat Cummins agreed to take the punishment.
An overrate offence in the Boxing Day Test of 2020 prevented Australia, the winners of the World Test Championship’s just finished 2021–23 cycle, from making it to the championship game.
Root had 861 rating points going into the match and was ranked sixth. He reached 887 points in the match after two strong performances. Labuschagne, meanwhile, dropped from 903 rating points to 877. The Australian thus, went down to third spot. Kane Williamson went up to second from fourth without having played a game as Travis Head, previously on third spot, also dropped down a position.
